![]() ![]() As Mithi Mukherjee reminded us in her book, India in the Shadows of Empire, India had embraced the colonial discourse and apparatus it had fought against only Gandhi had opposed the adoption of the Nation-State by his followers because he sensed that it would turn them into the very ‘tigers’ they had been ‘oppressed by. Drawing on Hind Swaraj, Huxley finds India rejecting the tiger of colonialism but adopting its tigerish nature. What tribute could have been as apposite as Aldous Huxley’s, just a year after the leader had fallen prey to his assassin’s bullets? Right at the outset the author of Brave New World locates India’s problematic in Gandhian terms: freedom for Indians meant the appropriation of the trappings of power, of the chains of the Nation-state. ![]() ![]() ![]() And Carmen -scolds- her own self for being angry! BE ANGRY! I remember being angry at the movie because her arc was to cry, put the jeans on, and attend a wedding of two people she barely knew and had no time or desire for her in their lives. ![]() ![]() An enormous part of this is her bio-dad himself. Other than that, this alternated between being a cute, fun read and a "damn, that is a -serious- issue being explored right now." Carmen's character has waaay more of a spine in the movie. One thing that made it difficult to read was my ebook didn't have section breaks, and the POVs switch multiple times per chapter, so it was somehting like trying to find a hidden puzzle piece. The movie, like "Crazy Rich Asians," is both a stellar adaptation and a better method of telling this actual story than the book is. ![]() I remember someone started crying and I got upset because at first, I thought they were laughing. The protagonist of "Pirate Latitudes" is Capt. It's simply an entertaining tale filled with crafty privateers, despicable villains, treasure hoards, double crosses and a sea monster. It's not a pirate novel with a secret gimmick. Set in the Caribbean in 1665, "Pirate Latitudes" is pretty much a straight-ahead adventure story. It reads like something its author would not have minded seeing published with a cover emblazoned with his name above the title. The good news here is that "Pirate Latitudes" doesn't seem to have been assembled from drafts, notes and the input of after-the-fact collaborators. When Michael Crichton died of cancer in 2008, he left in his files a complete manuscript, now published as "Pirate Latitudes." Some might say that Griessel, your troubled but brilliant alcoholic detective, is a bit of a cliche. And as a novelist I am fascinated with the deadline, with the role of time as a mechanism to increase the tension. The cold case was the basis of the book the sniper developed as a way to ratchet up the tension, and the pressure on Griessel. I mostly follow the dictum “conflict is the mother of suspense”, so I’ll be looking at as many sources of conflict for the protagonists as possible within the parameters of verisimilitude.
